Stand in Your Power!

What meanings or words do you associate with “power?” Most people think of authority, strength, greed, dominance, privilege, or other not-so-positive things.
What about the phrase “stand in your power?” Does that bring up different feelings for you? You might think of someone who is arrogant or self-centered. While it’s true that some people might have arrogant tendencies, that’s not what standing in your power truly means.
To stand in your power means you are firm and secure in your boundaries, beliefs, accountability, and integrity. It means you have the inner strength to assert yourself, speak your truth, and be confident in who you are.
In short, standing in your power is self-care.
We don’t always realize how often we give our power away through negative thoughts and behaviors. I can usually tell when my clients are having trouble standing in their power through what they say in their assessment or in their energy field, more specifically, in their solar plexus and/or throat chakras. When I notice this, the client and I set an intention to help them release old patterns and trauma that have been placed on them throughout their lifetime.
So, how exactly do you learn to stand in your power?
Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. I have a list of several affirmations associated with each chakra. I suggest an affirmation to my client based on the energy assessment.
Plan for unpleasant conversations or scenarios. An important part of standing in your power is being prepared when you need to approach difficult situations. I help clients recognize their triggers and learn how to react appropriately if they get triggered.
Build confidence by sharing your ideas and opinions. Your feelings are powerful and valuable. When you’re comfortable speaking up in safe environments, it becomes easier to stand your ground in more challenging environments.
Ask for what you need without apologizing. You are not a burden and deserve to be supported.
Honor yourself by saying no when you need to.
Practice maintaining your boundaries even when it’s hard.
Visualize yourself standing in your power with confidence.
Learn from others. Watch how people you respect handle difficult situations.
Take ownership of your mistakes. Accountability is an important part of living authentically.
Self-care isn’t always easy, but it is important. When you stand in your power, you learn how to:
Control your emotions and remain calm and focused
Speak up and advocate for yourself and others
Accept yourself, warts and all
Become resilient
Our society encourages us to give away our power and tries to tell us that anyone who holds onto their personal power is self-centered. That could not be further from the truth. Standing in your power is healthy and essential to accepting yourself and advocating for yourself. It empowers you to encourage others to stand in their power, too! Holding onto power from a place of love benefits you and the people around you.
Standing in your power can feel scary or difficult if you’ve developed a habit of giving your power away. Just know that you are strong enough and worthy of holding onto your power!
If you don’t know where to start, try saying this affirmation to yourself every day: I believe in myself.
